“When you can’t change the direction of the wind-adjust your sails”

– H. Jackson Brown Jr

We’ve all had to look at our businesses and think about how to transform during the past three months. We’ve had to be resilient and learn to co-exist with COVID-19. I’ve personally taken on the mantra of “control what you can control and keep going.”

I previously shared with you my initial thoughts on the phases of coping with this crisis. I used this acronym to talk about the phases:

Assess & Adjust

Last week I spoke about Limit & Learn and the importance of taking the time to stabilize and take advantage of available resources. This week, I’m focusing on Assess & Adjust. But what does assess & adjust really mean?

As we continue to go through the stages of opening up, we’re starting to understand what the new reality is for our businesses and, just as importantly, our customers. Their habits have changed and they will likely change for good. It’s important that our businesses change too. Think about the long term impact of the new economic environment and how to position our businesses for success. At The Shepherd Group, we’re looking to technology to help provide seamless digital transactions. We’ve also used the time to look internally, to ensure our team is 100% focused on providing the very best customer service.

Now is the time to protect your future. Look at your business and plan your pivot. Audit your liabilities and benefits to ensure your business and your employees are secure. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How do I adjust the business for the new economy, the new customer?

  • How do I protect my employees as my businesses open up?

  • How do I create the plan to ensure my business not only survives, but thrives in the future?

If you don’t have the answers, or want to learn more, call me at 416.249.1700 ext. 225. I’m here to help.

Stay tuned next week for my thoughts on phase 3: Position and Prosper.

Be safe and wear a mask!
